How to Apply Wood Veneer Edge Banding to Plywood
Wood veneer edge banding is a thin strip of wood veneer that is used to cover the exposed edges of plywood or other wood-based panels. The edge banding is typically made from the same species of wood as the plywood or panel, creating a seamless and natural look.
Wood veneer edge banding is available in various widths and thicknesses, ranging from about 1/2 inch to 2 inches wide and 0.5mm to 2mm thick. The most common width is 13/16 inch (21mm), which is suitable for most applications.
Some general process for applying wood veneer edge banding to plywood:
Prepare the plywood: Sand the edges of the plywood to remove any rough spots or splinters. Wipe the edges clean with a cloth to remove any dust or debris.
Cut the edge banding: Cut the wood veneer edge banding to the length of the edge of the plywood. Be sure to cut the edge banding slightly longer than the edge to allow for trimming.
Apply adhesive: Apply a thin layer of adhesive to the edge of the plywood using a brush or roller. Be sure to apply the adhesive evenly and cover the entire edge.
Apply the edge banding: Carefully align the edge banding with the edge of the plywood and press it firmly into place. Use a roller or block to press the edge banding down and ensure good adhesion.
Trim the edge banding: Once the adhesive has dried, trim the excess edge banding using a sharp utility knife or trimmer. Be sure to cut the edge banding flush with the edge of the plywood.
Sand and finish: Sand the edge of the plywood and edge banding lightly to remove any rough spots or excess glue. Apply a finish or stain to the edge banding to match the plywood or desired finish.
Special Note: The specific steps and materials used may vary depending on the type of edge banding and adhesive used. Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for best results.
